Recipe: Easy Oven Fries
Here’s a tried and true recipe that is easy to put together and liked by kids and grown-ups. They take about 10 minutes to prepare and about 40 minutes to bake.
- Russet potatoes, 1/2 per person for lighter appetites, 1 per person for bigger eaters
- vegetable oil
- salt, pepper or other seasonings (e.g. curry powder or paprika)
Heat your oven to 450 and put a rack near the middle. Brush a baking sheet lightly with oil. Wash the potatoes and cut them into slices about 1/2″ thick, then cut those slices into strips about 1/2″ wide. Put the potato strips in a bowl and cover them with cold water. Swish them around in the water. This washes off the potato starch and helps them get crispy. Drain the water and drizzle a small amount of oil over the top of the potatoes (about a teaspoon per potato). Use your hands to toss the potato strips with the oil. The water that is left on the potatoes will help spread the oil around. Sprinkle on your favorite seasonings and toss the strips again. Arrange the potatoes on the baking tray and put the tray in the oven. After 20 minutes, rotate the baking tray. Bake until golden brown, another 15-25 minutes.
